Demerara Timbers Limited (DTL) has been instructed to immediately stop collecting tolls from persons using the Mabura to Kurupukari Road.
In-House Media has confirmed with well-placed sources that the company was previously granted permission to collect the toll at a time when it was carrying out maintenance works along the roadway. However, that arrangement has since been overtaken by the government’s investment in the corridor.
For approximately eight years, the Government of Guyana, through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), has been maintaining the section of road from Mabura to Kurupukari. During this period, resources were invested in routine maintenance and rehabilitation works to keep the corridor operational.
Sources explained that this was one of the key factors behind the decision to bring an end to the toll. The government has also completed the upgrade of the Linden to Mabura Hill Road and is advancing another 30 kilometres of roadway from Mabura towards Kurupukari. The investment is expected to improve access, reduce transportation costs and support economic activity within the hinterland.
Against this background, well-placed sources confirmed that DTL has been instructed to immediately discontinue the collection of tolls along the Mabura to Kurupukari Road. This means that members of the public and other road users should no longer be charged by the company to access the roadway.
In-House Media understands that DTL has also been asked to provide confirmation that the collection of tolls has ended. The move is expected to support the free movement of people, goods and services along the corridor, particularly as the government continues its investments to improve hinterland connectivity.
